We are shining the light on Child Safety and Protection Month here at Valley Stream Hyundai provider, Millennium Hyundai. Here are some tips to keep kids safe in and around vehicles.
1. Keep Your Doors Locked:
This seems like a no-brainer unless you like your car to be easily broken into. However, unlocked car doors can pose as a safety hazard for children. One of the reasons being that children are adventurous and if left unattended could climb into your unlocked vehicle and experience heatstroke, which can possibly be fatal. Also, doors accidentally closing on the children’s fingers, arms, legs, and even head can be a major problem caused by unlocked doors.
2. Be Alert When Backing Out:
Lots of new cars these days come with a rearview camera that shows you what is exactly behind you when in reverse, making it much safer when backing out of a driveway or parking spot. For those cars that do not have one in their car, other steps need to be taken. Make sure your children know not to play around cars, and make sure you walk around and check behind your car to make sure the coast is clear. When the coast is clear, back out slowly and cautiously.
3. Small Children Need Car Seats:
There are no excuses. Small children need to be put in a car seat. Find a car seat that best fits your child and make sure they are secured properly. Also, make sure the car seat is the right fit for your vehicle, and that it straps in to your car the correct way. Car seats will save a child’s life in the event of an accident. Regular seat belts can harm a child as they are not fit to use them yet.
4. Older Kids Should Use Seatbelts Properly:
Kids who are tall enough to sit down with their backs to the seat, knees bent over the seat, and feet flat on the floor, are big enough to ride with a seat belt. The lap belt should lay across the upper thigh and not the stomach, and the top belt should go over the shoulder and chest. As a parent, make sure your child is wearing a seat belt every time they enter the car.
5. Never Leave a Child in the Car Unattended:
NEVER, under any circumstances should you leave a child in the car unattended. Not only is it neglect, but there are so many things that could go wrong and harm a child. One reason being the heatstroke I mentioned earlier in the blog. Also, unfortunately we live in a world where there are bad people, and a child alone in a car is a vulnerable target for those bad people. Be responsible and take your child with you and keep a watchful eye on them.
